On August 26, it was reported that according to the latest display backplane research by TrendForce, OLED technology has become the dominant display technology for smartphones. This shift is driving the penetration rate of mid-to-high-end backplane technologies like LTPS (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) and LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) in the smartphone market to nearly 57% by the end of 2024. Looking ahead to 2025, with improved production yields and better cost management, the penetration rate is expected to exceed 60%. The report highlights that most flagship smartphones currently utilize LTPO backplane technology, particularly in foldable phones with larger screen sizes. LTPO technology allows for dynamic screen segmentation and varying refresh rates, enhancing multitasking capabilities and energy efficiency. LTPO is an advanced form of LTPS, incorporating oxide semiconductors to optimize display performance, reduce leakage current, and adjust the screen's refresh rate based on content. However, due to its more complex manufacturing process, LTPO is more expensive to produce than LTPS. TrendForce further notes that the oxide semiconductor backplane technology used in smartphone screens, such as zinc oxide (ZnO) or indium gallium oxide (IGZO), is also prevalent in high-end displays, including those in Apple's iPad and MacBook series. These materials offer low leakage currents, making them ideal for future applications like transparent displays. The report also indicates that AMOLED panels are rapidly expanding into other IT markets, including tablets and laptops. When selecting backplane technology, IT equipment brands consider various factors, including display quality, energy consumption, cost, and product positioning. As new production capacities for large-generation AMOLED panels are established, panel manufacturers are likely to prioritize Oxide or LTPO high-end backplane technologies to meet the specifications required by different brands.
