According to reports from the on September 27th, Activision Blizzard is preparing to initiate a new round of layoffs in California in October.
This move comes as parent company Microsoft looks to cut costs within its gaming division. The layoffs will affect employees at Activision Blizzard’s Irvine and Santa Monica offices.
The company notified approximately 400 employees of the layoffs on September 12th, with plans to reduce staff by the end of the year.
The 140 employees will be laid off, including accountants, software engineers, and even the director of human resources for World of Warcraft.
In Santa Monica, the company will cut 110 positions. Notably, these layoffs include not only entry-level positions but also game directors and vice presidents.
Additionally, another wave of layoffs is expected at Activision Blizzard’s Playa Vista office in November, impacting 143 employees by year-end.
Activision Blizzard spokesperson Delay Simmons clarified that the layoffs primarily affect corporate and support roles, with some impact on gaming teams.
These job cuts are part of Microsoft’s broader cost-cutting measures across its gaming divisions.
In January 2024, Microsoft announced layoffs totaling 1,900 employees across Activision Blizzard, Xbox, and ZeniMax, with another 650 positions cut in early September.
