On May 16, 2024, Google introduced new security features in Android 15 and Google Play Protect at the I/O 2024 Developers Conference.

These enhancements focus on curbing fraud and malicious applications by running the AI-based Gemini Nano model locally to detect scam calls and more.

Google Play Protect now scans over 200 billion apps daily on Android devices, aiding over three billion users in protecting against malware threats.

By leveraging AI, Google Play Protect enhances real-time threat detection, monitoring, and identifying potential fraud and abuse.

In addition to hiding verification codes in notifications for most apps, Google has implemented expanded restricted settings for installing apps from the internet, requiring additional user permissions.

Android 15 also introduces measures against social engineering attacks during screen sharing by automatically blocking sensitive information in notifications to prevent remote exploitation.

Furthermore, the update introduces advanced mobile security technologies to combat fraud and surveillance, notifying users of unencrypted cellular connections that could expose their voice and SMS data to interception.
