Apple Considers Dual Color Filter Options for Affordable Vision Pro

Apple explores two color filter methods for a budget Vision Pro, opting for a lower 1500 ppi density and thinner MR device design options.

In this process, Apple is considering two distinct color filter solutions to balance quality and cost-effectiveness for its next-generation mixed reality (MR) device.

Significance of Color Filters in Head-Mounted Displays

Color filters are crucial for enhancing display performance in head-mounted displays (HMDs).

By selectively filtering specific wavelengths of light, these filters help optimize color accuracy and display clarity by absorbing or reflecting unnecessary light bands.

W-OLED + Color Filter (CF) Solution

The first option under consideration is the W-OLED+CF approach. This solution uses a deposited white OLED glass panel, which is then layered with red, green, and blue (RGB) color filters to create color.

The target pixel density for this setup is around 1500 ppi, half the density of Apple’s current Vision Pro headset.

In the current Vision Pro, Apple utilizes an advanced OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) display solution from Sony, boasting a pixel density of 3391 ppi.

For the W-OLED+CF version, Samsung Display may lead development efforts, utilizing research equipment from Sunic System at its A3 facility.

Thin Film Encapsulation (TFE) Solution

The alternative approach involves placing the color filter directly on thin-film encapsulation (TFE) covering the OLED panel.

In this setup, a W-OLED glass plate serves as the bottom layer, while the color filter plate functions as the top layer, simplifying the headset structure.

It suggests that Apple leans toward this TFE-based approach, as it requires only one glass plate, potentially reducing device thickness and weight.

However, forming the color filter directly on TFE poses additional challenges, necessitating precise low-temperature processing to prevent OLED damage.

By potentially cutting pixel density to 1500 ppi and selecting efficient color filter solutions, Apple aims to lower production costs, making its Vision Pro headset more accessible to a broader market segment.
