Canon is the quite behind in the 8K camera battle. There have been multiple reports of Sony, Fujifilm etc. all working on their future 8k offerings. But there was no word on this from Canon. However, a Canon 8K camera that can output 8K ProRes RAW video appeared at the WWDC 2019 demo. It was used to show the capabilities of the Apple Pro Display XDR. It seems that Canon is expected to catch up in time as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is underway.
As early as Photokina 2016, Canon had shown one of its 8K capable cameras. But ever since then, there was no word on the detailed specifications of the camera and when it would be available.
Canon 8K camera new appearance and details
The appearance of the Canon 8K movie machine shown at the WWDC 2019 is very similar to that which was shown at Photokina. But some visible details are slightly different. The camera in the Apple demo was using a Sigma 18-35mm T2.0 movie lens with an EF mount and 8K monitor by Atomos Shogun was used. ProRes RAW video was being outputted to the Apple Pro Display XDR display.
According to the plan, NHK will broadcast 8K to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. For this reason, Sony and Panasonic have released 8K broadcasters, and even Sharp has also produced 8K broadcasters and 8K portable cameras. Canon has become the one behind in this race. WWDC 2019 was Canon’s first 8K camera showcase outside the Canon Expo and photography exhibition. Does this mean that the new product is not far from an expected launch?
