On August 17, it was reported that Epic Games’ “Fortnite” has returned to the iOS platform in the European Union following the enforcement of the EU’s “Digital Markets Directive,” which requires Apple to permit third-party app stores.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney commented on this development, stating that the company has incurred losses exceeding $1 billion in its battle with Apple and Google.
These losses include legal fees and the revenue lost when “Fortnite” was removed from the App Store.
Despite the substantial financial impact, Sweeney asserted that the effort was “worth it.” He emphasized that the fight was not only for Epic but for all companies striving for fair competition in the digital marketplace.
Epic’s conflict with Apple and Google began in August 2020 when Epic opposed the 30% commission, known as the “Apple tax,” leading to “Fortnite” being removed from the App Store.
However, with the recent changes in the EU, the Epic Games Store has launched on iOS, allowing iPhone users in the EU to play “Fortnite” once again. This marks a significant milestone for Epic in their ongoing struggle for platform fairness.
