A U.S. federal judge announced that Google will face penalties by August 2025 for abusing its monopoly power in the search market.
The ruling comes after a lawsuit found Google maintained its dominance by paying billions to companies like Apple, Samsung, and Mozilla to be their default search engine.
Judge Amit P. Mehta ruled that Google violated Article 2 of the Sherman Act and is considering penalties.
The Department of Justice and state prosecutors have been asked to submit their recommendations for corrective actions by the end of the year, after which a new trial will be held to decide the way forward.
Judge Mehta also stated that he would consider the evolving competitive landscape in technology, including the impact of emerging technologies like AI chatbots when making his final verdict.
