In an effort to support the digital education ecosystem in India, HP has partnered with Google to produce locally-made Chromebooks. This collaboration aims to provide affordable, reliable, and secure computing devices to schools and educational institutions across the country. Production of these devices is set to begin on October 2, 2023.
The Chromebooks will be manufactured at HP’s facility near Chennai, which has been operational since August 2020. This move is expected to cater to the increasing demand for affordable computers in the education sector, primarily in India. Over 50 million students and teachers globally utilize Chromebooks, which run on Chrome OS, ensuring built-in accessibility and security features.
According to Vickram Bedi, Senior Director of Personal Systems at HP India, the company is dedicated to promoting digital equality and has launched several initiatives to promote digital education in India.
This collaboration with Google aligns with the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. Bani Dhawan, Head of Education for South Asia at Google, expressed similar sentiments, stating that the partnership would contribute to the development of a digital-first approach towards learning.
Since 2020, HP has increased its manufacturing capabilities in India and began producing a variety of laptop models domestically in 2021. Additionally, the firm now offers a wider selection of locally assembled business desktops, such as small form factor (SFF) desktops, desktop mini towers (MT), mini desktops (DM), and all-in-one PCs.
