On September 15, it was reported that Bloomberg News, citing sources familiar with the matter, revealed that U.S. chip giant Intel secured a federal grant of up to $3.5 billion to manufacture advanced processors for the U.S. Department of Defense.
This funding is part of the “Secure Enclave” project, which aims to bring the production of critical military application processors back to the United States.
Intel is currently the only company manufacturing leading-node chips within the U.S. The company’s most advanced process, the 18A technology, is expected to enter mass production by 2025, positioning it as the world’s most advanced manufacturing technology at that time.
The “Secure Enclave” initiative was created to meet the need for domestically produced advanced chips for U.S. military and intelligence operations.
The Secure Enclave project is dedicated to producing state-of-the-art chips for defense and intelligence in secure U.S. facilities, ideally separated from other component production.
Given the high costs associated with building a clean room solely for military-grade chips, Intel appears to be exploring alternative methods to meet the Department of Defense’s security standards.
While the project primarily focuses on advanced chips and leading-edge manufacturing, Bloomberg suggests it also includes other technologies.
According to the funding, an announcement could be made as early as next week.
