On September 26, According to a report during the Meta Connect 2024 Developer Conference, Meta announced that Ray-Ban smart glasses would receive significant software updates to enhance the intelligent experience.
Additionally, a limited edition transparent frame was introduced.
According to the report, the new features include a “Reminders” function, enabling the glasses to capture photos of the surrounding environment and send reminders to users later via mobile phone notifications.
Moreover, users will be able to scan QR codes and make phone calls directly through the glasses.
Currently, Meta Ray-Ban glasses can already extract text from static images and offer translation. The company has now revealed that it is working on a real-time language translation feature, allowing the glasses to translate spoken content in real time through their speakers.
This functionality is expected to launch in the next few months, supporting translation between English, French, Italian, and Spanish.
Meta is also planning to introduce real-time video processing capabilities, which will allow the glasses to immediately comprehend their environment. However, this feature is not expected to roll out until later this year.
In addition to software upgrades, Meta has partnered with Ray-Ban’s parent company, EssilorLuxottica, to release new color-changing lenses.
There is also a limited edition transparent frame that showcases all the internal technologies within the glasses. This frame has now been released but is limited to only 7,500 units.
While Meta has not disclosed sales figures for Ray-Ban’s smart glasses, CEO Mark Zuckerberg mentioned that the glasses have surpassed expectations, prompting EssilorLuxottica to ramp up production to meet rising demand.
Estimates indicate that Meta has shipped over 700,000 pairs of Ray-Ban smart glasses, with second-quarter orders this year more than doubling those of the first quarter.
Zuckerberg appears to be optimistic about the future of smart glasses. In an interview with The Verge this week, he commented, “I believe Meta AI is becoming an increasingly integral part of the glasses, allowing users to do more.
This doesn’t mean we’ll abandon our smartphones, but I think over time, we’ll start using the glasses more and keeping our phones in our pockets.”
