Microsoft’s gaming division laid off 650 employees, affecting Call of Duty Warzone Mobile and Warcraft Rumble game teams.
Microsoft’s gaming division continues to experience layoffs, with the latest round affecting 650 employees. This comes after 1,900 employees were let go in January of this year.
Game journalists reported that the layoffs impacted not only internal functional teams but also two mobile game teams.
One affected game is Call of Duty Warzone Mobile, which launched in March and had 50 million pre-registrations. However, the game did not meet the expected popularity levels, leading to a reduction in its development team.
Another game impacted by the layoffs is Warcraft Rumble, a tower defense game based on Blizzard’s fantasy series, which launched globally last November.
The game is now shifting its focus from “release” to “operation.”
These layoffs are part of multiple rounds of reductions in Microsoft’s gaming division since it completed the acquisition of Activision Blizzard last October.
Earlier this year, Microsoft also canceled a long-developed but unnamed survival game.
Additionally, in April, the company closed three studios under Bethesda Softworks: Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and Alpha Dog Studios
