On October 25, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, took to the (formerly Twitter) to address recent speculations about OpenAI’s alleged plans for a next-generation model named “Orion.”
Altman criticized the reports, describing them as “fake news out of control.”
Background Summary
Earlier today, it circulated news claiming that OpenAI intends to launch a cutting-edge model under the code name “Orion” in December 2024.
According to these reports, Orion is expected to have a different release strategy compared to GPT-4.
Unlike the open release of earlier versions through ChatGPT, Orion would initially be licensed to a select number of closely associated companies to aid them in developing their own products and features.
Some OpenAI executives were quoted in previous reports stating that Orion would be over 100 times more powerful than GPT-4.
In September 2024, OpenAI Japan’s CEO, Tadao Nagasaki, suggested that while the leap from GPT-3 to GPT-4 was more incremental, the upcoming “GPT Next” (Orion) would mark a significant performance breakthrough.
Altman’s response indicates that these claims about the model and its capabilities, as well as its planned rollout strategy, are not based on verified information.
