Samsung Isocell HMX 108MP sensor co developed with Xiaomi launched!

Are smartphones of the future going to be as great as DSLRs?

This morning, Samsung Electronics announced the launch of the 108 megapixels ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor and said it is the industry’s first mobile image sensor with more than 100 million pixels, Samsung also said that this is the result of close cooperation between Xiaomi and Samsung.

As stated on the Samsung official website:

With over 100 million effective pixels, ISOCELL Bright HMX delivers extremely detailed photos for outstanding photos even in extreme lighting conditions. As the first mobile image sensor with a large 1 /1.33-inch size, the HMX can absorb more light than a small sensor in low light conditions, and its pixel-combined Tetracell technology enables the sensor to mimic large pixel sensors, resulting in a brighter 27-megapixel image.

In a bright environment, Smart-ISO is a mechanism for intelligently selecting the amplifier gain level based on ambient lighting for optimal photoelectric signal conversion, switching to low ISO to increase pixel saturation and produce realistic photos. This mechanism uses a high ISO in darker settings to help reduce noise and make the image sharper.

For ISOCELL Bright HMX, Xiaomi and Samsung have worked closely together from the early concept stages to production, resulting in a groundbreaking 108MP image sensor.

We are happy with the image resolution that was previously only available in a few top digital SLR cameras can now be incorporated into a smartphone,” said Lin Bin, co-founder and president of Xiaomi.

“As we continue to work together, we anticipate not only bringing a new mobile camera experience, but also a platform where our users can create unique content.”

“Samsung continues to drive innovation in pixel and logic technology to design our ISOCELL Image sensors to capture the world and make it close to the way our eyes perceive,”
